Family Lawyers Serving Port Coquitlam
Port Coquitlam is one of the few cities in the region with a courthouse inside its own boundaries. That changes how people here think about separation. When the Law Courts are a ten-minute drive away, going to court can feel like the obvious first move. It almost never is. SiLaw Group Family Lawyers acts for Port Coquitlam families in divorce, parenting, support and property matters, and our usual job is to resolve the file long before anyone needs the building on Mary Hill Road. We practise from one office at Suite 201, 3108 Croydon Drive in Surrey, and consultations run by video, phone, or in person there.
The Law Courts on Mary Hill Road
The Port Coquitlam Law Courts sit at Unit A, 2620 Mary Hill Road. The province's courthouse directory lists the building as housing both the Provincial Court and the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and it has a family registry. The Provincial Court of BC's own location page for Port Coquitlam posts regular family sitting lists. In family law, the two levels divide the work. Parenting orders, child and spousal support, and family protection orders are Provincial Court territory. The divorce order itself and the division of family property and debt belong to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Which registry your matter should be filed at, if it needs filing at all, is one of the first things we confirm.
What Happens Before Anyone Sees a Courtroom
A family file is built in stages, and the courtroom is the last of them, not the first.
- Advice. You learn where you actually stand under the Family Law Act and, if you are married, the Divorce Act, before any decisions get made.
- Disclosure. Both sides exchange financial information, because no fair agreement is possible without it.
- Negotiation. Most issues narrow quickly once both people see the same numbers.
- Agreement. A written separation agreement records the resolution and is enforceable.
- Mediation. If negotiation stalls, mediation brings in a neutral to break the deadlock. Sandy Sihota is an accredited family law mediator, arbitrator and parenting coordinator, so this step stays in-house.
Court remains available for the cases that need it, including where safety requires an order, and we represent Port Coquitlam clients there when it does.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Courthouse Is Minutes from My House. Should We Just File?
Usually not as the first step. Filing starts a formal process with deadlines, forms and hearing dates, and it tends to harden positions. If you and your spouse can reach an agreement, with or without mediation, you get the same legal certainty faster and at lower cost. We recommend court when the situation calls for it, not because the building is nearby.
Which Court Deals with Which Part of a Separation?
Parenting, child support, spousal support and protection orders can be dealt with in Provincial Court. The divorce order and the division of family property and debt go to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. The provincial directory lists both levels at the Port Coquitlam Law Courts, and we confirm the right registry and level for your specific matter at the consultation.
Do You Handle Uncontested Divorces for Port Coquitlam Couples?
Yes, regularly. If the two of you already agree, an uncontested divorce is mostly careful paperwork, and almost all of it can be handled from home. Many couples never attend court in person at all.
What Languages Do You Work In?
English and Punjabi. The consultation, the negotiation and the documents can all be explained in either, whichever your family is most comfortable in.
