Unbundled Legal Services for BC Family Matters
Legal Help by the Task, Not the Whole Case
Unbundled legal services let you hire a family lawyer for one defined task instead of the whole case. You might want a lawyer to review a separation agreement before you sign it, draft a single court document, or prepare you for a hearing you plan to argue yourself. You pay for that task, and you stay in charge of everything else. In British Columbia this arrangement is often called a limited scope retainer, and it has become a practical middle path between doing everything alone and paying for full representation.
SiLaw Group Family Lawyers is a boutique family law and mediation firm in South Surrey. Family law is the only kind of law we practise, and we serve clients in English and Punjabi. Unbundled work is a regular part of our practice, not an afterthought. We explain why it matters for access to justice in our post on unbundled services when hourly fees are out of reach.
Tasks We Commonly Take On
Most unbundled retainers in our office fall into four groups:
- Document review. You bring us a draft separation agreement, a proposed consent order, or an offer from the other side. We go through it with you, flag the problems, and explain your options before you sign or respond.
- Drafting one document. We prepare a single item, such as an affidavit, a court form, or a settlement letter, and you file or send it yourself.
- Coaching before a hearing or mediation. We help you organize your evidence, plan what to say, and anticipate the questions a judge or mediator is likely to ask. Our guide to preparing for your first court appearance shows the kind of ground this covers.
- Advice at key moments. A focused meeting when something changes, such as an offer to settle, a new court date, or a demand for disclosure, so your next step is an informed one.
If financial disclosure is the task, our Form F8 guide explains what the BC Supreme Court expects to see and where people commonly go wrong.
When Does Unbundling Fit?
Unbundling works well when the issues are reasonably defined and what you need most is confidence at specific points. It suits people who can read carefully, keep track of deadlines, and speak for themselves once they know what to say. It also suits people whose budget simply cannot stretch to full representation. Targeted legal help at the right moments is far better than no legal help at all, and it often prevents the expensive mistakes that come from guessing.
It can also be a bridge. Some clients start with one task, see how the case develops, and add tasks as they go. Others use a single review to confirm they are on track and never need more.
When Full Representation Is Safer
Some cases should not be handled piecemeal. We will tell you plainly when we think yours is one of them. Warning signs include family violence or a serious power imbalance, urgent applications where timing is critical, complex property or business interests, and high conflict files where the other side has a lawyer and is litigating hard. In those situations, handing a lawyer one task at a time can leave dangerous gaps between the tasks, because no one is watching the whole board. If money is the obstacle, ask us about payment options and smaller scopes before you decide to go it alone.
How the Scope Is Defined in Writing
Every unbundled retainer starts with a written agreement that lists exactly what we will do and what stays with you. If we are drafting an affidavit, the agreement says so, and it also says that filing, serving, and meeting deadlines remain your responsibility unless we agree otherwise. Clear boundaries protect both of us: you always know what you have paid for, and nothing falls into the gap between your job and ours. When the listed work is done, the retainer ends. If you want more help later, we define the next task in writing and start again.
What Unbundled Help Costs
We keep fees for discrete services on one page rather than scattering numbers around the site. Our pricing and fees page describes the unbundled and flat fee services we offer and how each is billed. The first 30 minutes of a consultation are free, which is usually enough time to tell you whether your task is a good candidate for unbundling and what it is likely to involve.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Unbundled Legal Services?
Unbundled legal services, also called limited scope retainers, are an arrangement where a lawyer handles specific defined tasks in your case rather than the entire file. You keep control of the case and pay only for the tasks you assign. Common examples are reviewing an agreement, drafting one document, and preparing you for a hearing.
Can a Lawyer Help With Just One Hearing or One Mediation Session?
Often, yes. Coaching you before a hearing or a mediation is one of the most requested unbundled tasks. Whether a lawyer can take on a single court appearance for you depends on the file and the task, so raise it in the consultation and we will give you a straight answer.
What If My Case Gets More Complicated?
The scope can grow with the case. Because each task is defined in writing, adding work is simple: we agree on the next task and record it. If the file turns into something that genuinely needs full representation, we will say so and explain what that would look like, including for an uncontested divorce that has stopped being uncontested. For a fuller picture of the divorce process itself, see our complete divorce guide.
