Family Lawyers Serving Kelowna

Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan, and unlike many smaller BC communities it has a genuine choice of family lawyers of its own. So this page starts with full disclosure. SiLaw Group Family Lawyers is a boutique family law and mediation firm with a single office in Surrey, roughly 400 kilometres of highway away. We act for Kelowna clients anyway, and the rest of this page explains when that makes sense and when it does not.

The Same Law from Surrey to the Okanagan

Family law in this province is not local law. The Family Law Act is a British Columbia statute, and it reads the same in Kelowna as it does anywhere else in BC. The Divorce Act is federal and applies across Canada. The rules for parenting, support and dividing property do not shift at any city limit.

Most of a family file is advice, financial disclosure, negotiation and drafting, and all of that moves by video, phone and email. When a matter does need a judge, many appearances in the Supreme Court of British Columbia can proceed remotely where the court permits it. So the real question is never whether a Surrey firm can act on a Kelowna file. It is whether remote representation suits your particular file, and a free 30-minute consultation is how we answer that honestly, in both directions.

When a Kelowna Lawyer Makes More Sense

Sometimes one does. A matter headed toward a long contested trial, with repeated in-person court dates, is often served well by counsel who works near the courthouse. Some people simply want a lawyer they can sit across from every time. If your file looks like that, we will say so in the first conversation, and all it cost you was half an hour.

Kelowna clients who choose us tend to have one of a few reasons. A spouse has already consulted around town and closed off local options. Local firms they liked had no capacity. They wanted counsel with no overlap with their business or social circles in the city. Or they wanted mediation run in-house and fees they could see in advance on a published pricing page.

Where Kelowna Family Matters Are Heard

The Kelowna Law Courts at 1355 Water Street house both levels of court that deal with family law. The Provincial Court hears parenting, support and family protection order matters under the Family Law Act, and its family lists sit in that building. Divorce itself and the division of family property and debt belong to the Supreme Court of British Columbia, which also sits at 1355 Water Street, with a Supreme Court of British Columbia registry in the building. Most separations settle by agreement or mediation without either level ever being involved.

What Kelowna Clients Bring Us

Divorce, both contested and uncontested. Separation agreements that deal with parenting, support, property and debt in one document. Common-law separations, which the Family Law Act treats much like marriages after two years of living together. And mediation, which does not get referred out, because Sandy Sihota is an accredited family law mediator and arbitrator. We work in English and Punjabi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What If My Spouse Already Met with Family Lawyers in Kelowna?

A consultation can prevent a firm from later acting for the other spouse. Kelowna has enough firms that this rarely closes every door, but it closes some, and a number of our Kelowna clients first called us for exactly this reason. A firm 400 kilometres away sits entirely outside that problem.

Can You Appear at the Kelowna Law Courts If It Comes to That?

Our lawyers can act in any court registry in British Columbia. Many appearances can proceed by video where the court permits it, and where a step genuinely requires someone standing at 1355 Water Street, we plan for that early and you will know what it involves, and what it costs, before anything is filed.

How Do Your Fees Compare with Hiring in Kelowna?

We cannot speak to other firms' rates. Ours are set out on our pricing page, the first half hour of advice costs nothing, and because meetings happen by video, nobody bills travel time to get to them.

Is Video Really Enough for Something This Personal?

For most steps, yes, and some clients find hard conversations easier from their own kitchen table than from a lawyer's boardroom. For the steps where it is not enough, we tell you that too. Honesty about the limits of remote work is the whole basis on which we offer it.
