Family Lawyers Serving Prince George
Nobody in Prince George needs a lecture about distance. The city is the service centre for the northern half of the province, and people here already deal with doctors, head offices and government by phone and screen as a matter of routine. SiLaw Group Family Lawyers is a family law and mediation firm in Surrey, nearly 800 kilometres south. In most industries that would end the conversation. In family law it mostly does not, and the north is the part of BC where that is least surprising.
Eight Hundred Kilometres, Zero Difference in the Law
The Family Law Act governs parenting, support, property division and protection orders throughout British Columbia, north and south alike. The Divorce Act is federal and identical in every province. There is no northern version of either statute, no regional forms and no different tests. What changes with geography is logistics, and logistics is exactly what a video-first practice is built to handle.
Remote Is Not the Workaround Here. It Is the Norm
Most of a separation consists of advice, financial disclosure, negotiation and drafting, which are screen-and-email tasks wherever your lawyer is. An uncontested divorce in BC is normally granted on filed documents, with nobody required to stand in a courtroom. Mediation sessions run over video, and we run them in-house because Sandy Sihota is an accredited family law mediator and arbitrator. When a court appearance is needed, many can proceed remotely where the Supreme Court of British Columbia or the Provincial Court permits it, which matters even to clients whose lawyer is across town when it is minus thirty and the roads are bad.
Prince George also has family lawyers of its own, and some files belong with them, particularly matters heading into long contested hearings. The free 30-minute consultation exists so we can sort your file into the right pile honestly, even when the right pile is not ours.
The North's Courthouse Is a Local One
If your matter does need a judge, the courtroom is in your city, not ours. The Prince George Law Courts at J.O. Wilson Square, 250 George Street, house both the Provincial Court and the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Provincial Court's family list sits in the building. Parenting, support and protection order matters can proceed at the Provincial Court level, while the divorce order itself and the division of family property run through the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
What We Do for Northern Clients
Divorce and separation, parenting arrangements across big distances, child support including cases built on camp work and rotation schedules, spousal support, property and debt division, and mediation and arbitration as the alternative to court. If you are not sure what your situation legally involves yet, our overview of family law issues in BC is a sensible first read. We advise in English and Punjabi.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Lawyer 800 Kilometres Away Actually Practical for Prince George?
For most files, yes, because nearly every step is a conversation or a document rather than an appearance. Northern clients often notice no practical difference between a lawyer in Surrey and one downtown, except that the Surrey one may have been easier to book. The honest exception is the courtroom-heavy file, and we name that exception up front.
What Happens When Something Must Be Done in Person?
Less needs to be than people expect. Documents that have to be sworn can usually be sworn before a commissioner for taking affidavits in Prince George rather than ours in Surrey. Where a court step truly requires a lawyer physically present, we plan it with you early, with the costs visible, instead of treating it as a surprise.
How Does Parenting Time Work When Parents Live a Region Apart?
Northern parenting arrangements often have to account for real distance between households, travel costs and work rotations. The Family Law Act asks what arrangement serves the child, and schedules can be built around school terms, holidays and travel realities. It is detailed work, and it is work we do by video with parents in two different towns at once.
Where Would a Prince George Divorce Actually Be Granted?
By the Supreme Court of British Columbia, which sits at the Prince George Law Courts, 250 George Street, at J.O. Wilson Square. In an uncontested divorce the order is normally made on the filed documents, so in the usual case nobody attends anything.
